Substantial Benefits to Judges and the Court System
Our programs have a substantial
impact on the system. Under our Delayed Entry Of Judgment
(DEJ) program, the Judge refers the defendants to the
program, which is later in the process than under the
DOC format. However, the savings are still substantial.
When you consider that it takes approximately $6,000
a day to operate a courtroom. This includes all the
required court personnel's wages. Anything that can
be done to shorten their workdays and /or reduce the
number of appearances by the defendant in the courtroom
saves money. Also, the Judge can feel much better about
giving the first-time offender, who may have made a
stupid mistake, an opportunity to learn from their mistake
rather than convicting the defendant which narrows their
employment opportunities along with other immensely
negative impacts that a criminal record has on a person's
life, as well as the community.
Our Deferral Of Charges (DOC) program
would have the most significant impact, maximizing savings
to the system. Under this format, our program receives
the case at the earliest opportunity. The major savings
would come in the form of saved man-hours in the court
room to prosecute these minor misdemeanor crimes. Now,
the prosecutors can more effectively focus on the more
serious crimes. Furthermore, instead of the prosecutor
approaching the board for more funds so that new attorney's
may be hired ($40-$50,000 to start per year) to deal
with the ever increasing work loads, he or she can more
effectively deal with the case loads and redistribute
those funds for more appropriate purposes.
